Do you ever feel like there is so much “to-do” and you get so stressed out and totally overwhelmed that you feel like you can’t even breathe?
Ohhhh… me too! Especially around the holidays.
And I always seem to get sick around the holiday’s too! I miss the best Christmas party or get stuck in bed when I feel like there are so many fun things to do and so many things I “have to do”.
And those “to-do” things will never get done without me…right?
How to get out of Holiday Crash and Burn?
The good thing is that I FINALLY know how to bounce back from the holiday crash and burn.
… Just breathe!
Before I started eating a healthy gluten free and Paleo diet without all of the processed foods (that I was totally addicted to), I would be stuck in bed for over a week.
And then I’d be walking around like a zombie because I still didn’t feel right.
I just never could get better fast enough, no matter what over-the-counter medicine or prescription medicine I took.
Today, when I get sick, or my body just crashes on me from pure exhaustion, I know how to bounce back.
Why STOP when you don’t even have time to breathe?
Your body gets sick, exhausted, crashes and burns (especially during the Holidays) because you forget to take time out for yourself.
I know what you may think…there’s no any time to take time for yourself. Or, taking time for yourself can seem selfish. But, thankfully…it’s just the opposite.
Holidays are a time of giving. And mama, you are SO good at giving.
You give to everybody and everything. There is no stopping your loving heart.
But, you must stop and give some of that love to yourself FIRST!
I know first hand, because I’m in bed right now writing this article. Just for a day but, I used to have to be stuck in bed for days and weeks because I never stopped to put myself first.
So, at the Holidays, I too forget to put myself first and need to practice self care.
Today, I put myself in bed to rest. I don’t “have to” be in bed. But, I’m listening to the whispers of my body and giving it the self care it needs. Especially listening to it before it screams at me in pain, I gain weight gain or have a total breakdown that gets me really sick or I can’t even move.
Can I get out of bed right now? Sure. But, I know that taking some extra self-care time to rest in bed is the best thing for me, my body and even my family.
But, you or I can’t always stay in bed. So, we need to…
Breathing is a form of Self Care
You know you can’t live without breathing. But did you know you might be doing it all wrong? I never knew that until I learned this…
When you use breathing as self-care, you are not just breathing to live but you are breathing your way to better health!
Learning to breathe consciously and with awareness can be a valuable tool in helping to restore balance in the mind and body. – Deepak Chopra
Did you also know that mind, body, and breath are intimately connected and can influence each other?
Our breathing is influenced by our thoughts, and our thoughts and physiology can be influenced by our breath. – Deepak Chopra
So how do you take care of yourself when you feel anxious, tired, and distressed?
When you’re feeling tense and want to immediately relax try to breathe slowly!
When you are trying to get your kid’s to calm down or your spouse on your side… just BREATHE.
If you notice whenever we feel stressed or anxious our breathing pattern changes. Our breathing becomes shallow as our blood pressure and heart rate increases, there’s muscle tension, and sweating . It’s your body’s natural response when you feel alarmed and threatened.
But shallow breathing prolongs the feeling of anxiety and makes the feeling of stress worse.
Take control of your breathing!
Take the time to breathe in more from your belly/diaphragm not from your shoulders/chest.
Do you remember how your breathing pattern is when you are relaxed and happy?
You breathe through your nose in a slow, evenly and in a gentle way!
Remember this and copy it the next time you feel so stressed.
In with the New, Out with The Old
Deep breathing floods your brain, lungs and bloodstream with oxygen. This deep breathing is relaxing and cleansing.
It works like this, “in with the new and out with the old”.
Meditation also relieves stress and anxiety. And the simplest way to begin a meditation practice is through breathing. Cool! This Self-care act is like a 2 for 1.
So, not only is breathing cleansing your mind body and spirit, but it is also a form of meditation. And that’s just another act of self care us busy moms say we have no time to do.
How to remember to Breathe for self care and meditation
The answer is Red Light breathing.
As a mom, you’re always driving around town. And round and round and round…I do too.
That’s why I developed my Red Light Breathing Technique.
With my Red Light Breathing you will never forget to do your self-care breathing meditation.
Whenever you are at a red light take in big deep energizing breaths from your belly. Let your belly/diaphragm expand as you breathe in.
Then exhale and release your stress and toxins.
Just Breathe in and count 1, 2, 3 and breathe out counting 3, 2, 1 and repeat until your light turns green.
Be sure to keep your eye’s open and on the red lights so you don’t forget to breathe this holiday season!
So, how do you you fit MORE self care into your day and remember to do all of the new self care tips you learn?
