JJ Virgin is a celebrity nutritionist and New York Times Best-Selling Author of The Virgin Diet: Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 Pounds, Just 7 Days. Yes! We are fans, the lady knows her science behind weight loss and we agree with her that fad diets do not work. Her original book title did not have the word “Diet” in it, but her publisher told her that diet books sell and food protocols/lifestyle changes don’t.
The Virgin Diet: Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 pounds, Just 7 days – True! Both Michael and I tried it as a re-set to our way of eating and we each lost 5 to 7 pounds in 7 days
What is The Virgin Diet?
It is a food elimination diet/medical elimination diet where you are not eating 7 foods that are scientifically proven to be high Food Intolerant Foods in today’s American Diet – We agree and all four of us have allergies and food intolerances to most if not all of these foods. These high Food Intolerant foods cause all different reactions in people. Some you cannot even see or feel, like inflammation. Bottom line, any one of your reactions to the food intolerances also cause inflammation in your body and that causes you to gain or keep on weight and causes illness over time. And, as an example, this may uncover gluten sensitivity symptoms and may indicate why gluten free may be an option for you.
What are the 7 Foods to Drop?
The following are foods to avoid to lose weight while on the Virgin Diet:

Is this a difficult diet?

In our opinion, this is not a diet for beginners. I think you have to give up too many foods that you are probably eating everyday. But, it’s totally worth it and great if you can do it! Michael and I would have never been able to stay on this diet a couple of years ago. Now, when we tried this, we only had to drop 3 of the 7 foods because the other foods were already out of our diet due to us knowing we were already allergic and/or intolerant.
And when we did drop all 7 Foods we had sugar cravings we had to beat. The Virgin Diet book explains how you most often crave the foods you are intolerant to and how sugar is addicting. Crazy but true! Again, proving why these 7 Foods make us and keeps us fat.
I am also not in total agreement with shakes as meal replacement. Even though they are filled mostly with real food, they do also call for her brand or any brand that meets her specifications of vegan pea-rice protein powder. I’m all for shakes every once in a while but not for life. Every once in a while like on weekends, cook some breakfast! I’m not a fan of shakes every day for life because I have seen our family get intolerant to some protein powders (especially whey). So all we do is change up our shakes. Use vegan pea protein, pure Paleo protein or mix it up with either hemp protein powder (we like this one by Navitas Naturals) or collagen protein (we like Upgraded Collagen Protein by Bulletproof Exec). I also changed up the ingredients a little to rotate them and not get so bored of the shake as a meal replacement.
But, I DO recommend this diet. Why?
Because, it’s all about “making small changes that will make a big impact”. I recommend you try tailoring this diet to you. Just eliminating some of these foods would be a great healthy step and great accomplishment. Eliminating some of these foods will still reduce inflammation and help you lose weight!
And if you Drop all 7 Foods and follow the diet, you will lose weight fast, kick your cravings and have more energy. It’s an awesome thing! And I want to share it /”Pay it Forward in Health” so that you can have this too!

Note that there is NO ONE PERFECT DIET FOR EVERYONE. This is why I always highly recommend you look at different diets and take what works for you and toss out what doesn’t so that you can find YOUR Perfect diet that works for you!
What can you eat?
You are giving up 7 major foods in our Standard American Diet and it seems like there is nothing left to eat. But, there is lots you can eat on this diet and lots of it. It’s called REAL FOOD. You will not even have to count calories like in other diets. The book explains what exactly you can eat, has a restaurant guide and some yummy and simple recipes for you to follow. Again, if you can’t give up all 7 Foods, try some of the recipes and you will be surprised how you can eat a delicious and satisfying dish without the 7 Foods. It’s motivating!
Will I ever eat these 7 foods again?
YES! That is why this is not really a diet. There are 3 Cycles in this book. Cycle 1 Elimination, Cycle 2 Reintroduction and Cycle 3 The Virgin Diet for Life. Cycle 1 You remove the 7 foods to reset your body, reduce inflammation and other allergic reactions and you lose weight fast. Once your body is reset/clean of these foods (it takes a total of 21 days), JJ Virgin shows you how to reintroduce the 7 foods one at a time, for a week at a time in Cycle 2. This is so that you can see how your body reacts to that food. If you feel sick or gain weight then you know you shouldn’t eat it anymore or reduce the times you eat it. It’s your choice! This diet requires you to listen to your body. This is like a big science experiment and you are the scientist. In fact, JJ Virgin states the following: “Your Body is not a bank account. It’s a chemistry lab.” And Cycle 3 is about sustaining your success.
Why we recommend the companion book, “The Virgin Diet Cookbook”:
This will give you a full book of recipes that do not contain any of the 7 foods. You will have a book full of delicious recipes filled with real food while you are on the diet and maintaining your success. And if it seems impossible to give up these foods, you will still have a book full of delicious recipes filled with real food and you can try these recipes whenever you can and you will feel better for it. Because it’s all about small changes with big impact.
