Do you know that Alzheimer’s starts in the brain 30-50 years BEFORE any symptoms appear?
Yes, research science has shown that Alzheimer’s Disease, which is the most common form of dementia, will start 30-50 years prior to any visible signs of symptoms. According to the Alzheimer’s Organization, there are more than 200,000 people in their 40’s and 50’s with early onset Alzheimer’s. As such, these statistics are not in your favor.
But, the good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way!
With more than 83,000 (and counting), Dr. Daniel Amen of the Amen Clinics has amassed the world’s largest database of SPECT Brain Scans related to behaviors from patients in 93 countries. SPECT scans clinically show 3 distinct features of an individual’s brain activity:
- Good activity
- Too little activity
- Too much activity
Combining clinical observations with these “pictures” of the brain, Dr. Amen’s studies have shown correlation of behavior and disease patterns with images of individual’s brains. So, a picture of your brain today, if it shows similar activity levels of a typical Alzheimer’s patient, could be an indicator of your future health progression to Alzheimer’s Disease. The cool thing is that you can know today, well before you reach retirement age, while you still have time to do something to change the health of your brain.
What can the NFL teach you about changing your brain?
Dr. Amen and his colleagues performed the very 1st and largest study of active and retired NFL players to assess the level of damage their brains had endured while playing professional football. What the study showed is that high levels of long-term damage was indeed evident. But, that is probably obvious to many reading this article.
What is not as obvious, and most impressive, was the second part of the study which involved putting the players on a Brain-Smart Program, that included brain-boosting diets, supplements and physical activity.
The results: Of those players in the Brain-Smart Program, 80% showed signs of increased blood flow to the brain, improved memory and mood AND reversal of brain damage, as evidenced by follow-up brain scans. The major take-away from all of this is that,
You are not stuck with the brain you have!
Will you change your brain and leave a Legacy of Health?
Dr. Amen presented on the TEDx West Coast Stage in October 2013 the details behind his science and clinical backing of his philosophy.
